About the title

I have wanted to start an education blog for a while, documenting my experiences in the classroom as a new public school teacher. But I couldn’t find the right title until the other day when I was thinking about my favorite poet, Emily Dickinson and her poem “Fame is a bee.” The simple poem goes:

Fame is a bee.

It has a song—

It has a sting—

Ah, too, it has a wing.

Bees contribute a valuable resource to nature, they pollinate flowers and make honey. But we certainly don’t give them enough credit for their contributions, more often than not we scream out anytime a bee is near us! As a public school teacher, I feel viewed in the same light. We contribute a valuable (and underappreciated) resource to society, ourselves. We dedicate our lives to teaching children, to raise them to be great and contributing members of society. But we are often cast down upon when something goes wrong in a school, classroom, etc. The powers that be are stretching teachers to the absolute limit, and yet, we are still here (and we aren’t giving up)! Like the bee, we are overworked and underappreciated by and large, but if you look closer, you will see that both the teacher and the bee are unparalleled and are necessary for a good, healthy, and decent society.
